Questions players ask
Which scale should I learn first?
The minor pentatonic. It has five notes and one box shape covers most rock and blues soloing (A minor sits at the 5th fret). Learn the major scale next: every mode is built from it.
How can one set of notes fit several scales?
Scales share notes. C major and A natural minor use exactly the same seven notes; what changes is which note feels like home. Tap your home note first and its scale ranks first.
What's the difference between a mode and a scale?
A mode is a major scale played from another of its notes. D dorian is the C major scale from D to D, which gives it a minor sound with a brighter sixth.
What are the chords in this key?
For seven-note scales, these are the chords built on each note of the scale, numbered in Roman numerals. Songs in that key mostly use them.
